{"id":311,"date":"2010-10-27T16:07:14","date_gmt":"2010-10-27T16:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.virtuallearning.org.uk\/?page_id=311"},"modified":"2010-10-29T20:31:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-29T20:31:00","slug":"a-learning-community","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.virtuallearning.org.uk\/?page_id=311","title":{"rendered":"A Learning Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.virtuallearning.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Communities1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-375\" title=\"Communities\" src=\"http:\/\/www.virtuallearning.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Communities1-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.virtuallearning.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Communities1-300x193.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.virtuallearning.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Communities1.jpg 849w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Traditional models of learning have reified into concepts of learning, with the teacher frozen as the embodiment of skills and knowledge that have to be passed on to students.\u00a0\u00a0 In the United Kingdom, the New Opportunities Funding CD-ROM, produced to develop teachers\u2019 ICT curriculum competence, was the embodiment of that viewpoint at the junction of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> and 21<sup>st<\/sup> centuries.<\/p>\n<p>The pace of change in industry and technology had burst through into schools.\u00a0\u00a0 The syllabus had been expanded to the point of absurdity: the application of knowledge became a critical issue for those who navigated these shoals as captains of industry.\u00a0\u00a0 Just-in-Time became the watchword for Learning, as it was in industry.\u00a0\u00a0 Whereas Industry had re-engineered itself, however, Education, like Lot\u2019s Wife, looked backwards.<\/p>\n<p>The pace of change often means that teachers carry a train of conceptual baggage, with expectations as to what should be taught and why it should be taught.\u00a0\u00a0 These conflict with students as practitioners, who battle with the teachers and academics who act as the gatekeepers over what constitute standards.<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge is seen as contained in artefacts \u2013 \u2018knowledge artefacts\u2019, whereas for many students knowledge is contained <em>within<\/em> the artefacts of production: the artefacts produced.<\/p>\n<p>The MirandaNet community consists of teachers and academics as practitioners, who embody the problems faced by their students at the bleeding edge of technology.\u00a0\u00a0 Within this community cognition is manifested as both materiel and social.\u00a0\u00a0 New technology is both the network for communication and also the collective memory of the community.<\/p>\n<p>The website acts as the repository of memory: newsletters, case studies, the forum for meetings, workshops and conferences; the source of expert knowledge, with the posting of questions and collaborative learning.<\/p>\n<p>This paper examines the ways in which MirandaNet, as the social construction for how we learn and why we learn, forms the focus for life-long learning.\u00a0\u00a0 The distributed cognition manifested within this grouping of practitioners disseminates into the wider structures of education.<\/p>\n<p>This paper was originally published as:<\/p>\n<p>Cuthell, J.
